Odeh Abu Tayeh was born in 1850. He was the fourth of five sons and one sister called Alya, and he was famous for protecting her, so he came to be known as “Alya’s Brother”. His father Harb Abu Tayeh was the leader of the Eastern branch of Al-Huwaitat family. Odeh assumed leadership when he was 20 years old (despite having older brothers), and he soon gaineda reputation among the tribes and became famous all over the desert, not only the Bedouins feared his raids, but also the Ottoman Empire men. He was also a refuge for anyone who was sentenced to jail or evading taxes or running away from compulsory military service; which was perhaps the reason why American journalist Lowell Thomas to dub him “Robin Hood”.
